Still Alice is a compelling debut novel about a 50 year old woman's sudden descent into early onset Alzheimer's disease written by first time author Lisa Genova who holds a Ph D in neuroscience from Harvard University Alice Howland happily married with three grown children and a house on the Cape is a celebrated Harvard professor at the height of her career when she notices a forgetfulness creeping into her life As confusion starts to cloud her thinking and her memory begins to fail her she receives a devastating diagnosis early onset Alzheimer's disease Fiercely independent Alice struggles to maintain her lifestyle and live in the moment even as her sense of self is being stripped away In turns heartbreaking inspiring and terrifying Still Alice captures in remarkable detail what's it's like to literally lose your mind Reminiscent of A Beautiful Mind Ordinary People and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time Still Alice packs a powerful emotional punch and marks the arrival of a strong new voice in fiction I was disappointed with the book although if the reviews are to be believed the film is brilliant Throughout this novel I never got to know the characters They came across as two dimensional and it was as though I was watching them from a distance I didn't believe in the way Alice's children behaved or that her husband could be so detached The whole scenario of the dementia being revealed to the family was presented in a matter of fact somewhat unemotional manner There was a lot of 'telling' by the author she went for a run she was sweating he looked happy excited etc and use of cliches eg using a mirror to describe an appearance In my opinion there is a lack of narrative style and part of the joy of reading for me is the way in which a writer uses language There's also lots of unnecessary medical terminology which is meaningless to the lay person and I can't remember reading a abrupt and unsatisfactory ending There are pages of &A's with the author at the end On a positive note the success of the book and film has brought the subject of early onset dementia out into the open and increased public awareness and hopefully sensitivity
