This essential In Easy Steps guide instructs you how to program in the powerful Python language giving complete examples that illustrate each aspect with colourized source code In the step by step trusted formula you'll be a Python guru in no time Python in easy steps begins by explaining how to install the free Python interpreter so you can uickly begin to create your own executable programs by copying the book's examples It demonstrates all the Python in EpubPython language basics before moving on to provide examples of Object Oriented Programming OOP and CG. I really did want to like this because I found Sean McManus' Scratch Programming from the same series of books to be all engrossing and terrific fun I can't fault McGrath's knowledge he really does know his Python and the examples are all laid out with care and clarity which cannot be said for some other Python books I have gone through recentlyHowever it is all too dry and bitty To eat one digestive biscuit is a pleasure; to eat two hundred is a chore As a compendium of Python commands this book is pretty useful but it pretends to be a beginners course and it is not There is no serious thread running through the book just an endless list of 'do this do that' examples all presented in an unpleasantly abstract wayA good teacher will show a student perhaps two or three things and then nudge them towards experimenting with that knowledge This is a teacher who just shows you one thing and then another thing and then another thing and then another thing and then another thing and then another thing and then another thing and then another thingThis book feels like listening to a four year old tell you all about what they did on their family holiday we did this; we did that; we did the other but being unable to tell you the name of the country they went to and unable to point to it on a map

Highly recommended but not a complete guide After just a few weeks your children will start searching for things outside the scope of the book but as with all of Mike's books that I have seen so far it is colourful and engaging making it good as a first book on Python for childrenThis is not however as good a book as Carol Vorderman's Computer Coding For Kids but Mike's books are specific per topic Linux Java Python etc whereas Carol's is a fantastic overview of the computing subject If you buy one book buy Carol's If you want a specific subject book for a child buy one of Mike's If you want something for the Raspberry Pi owning child look at Adventures in Minecraft which covers Python or Adventures in Raspberry Pi which covers everything in a Raspberry Pi wayAll books listed are great and good value so buy them all and have Christmas and Birthday's covered
