Witness to Hope The Biography of Pope John Paul IIFascinatingsheds light on the history of the twentieth century for everyoneNew York Times Book ReviewNow with an updated preface the latest edition of the definitive biography of Pope John Paul II that explores how influential he was on the world stage and in some of the most historic events of the twentieth century that can still be felt todayWitness to Hopeis the authoritative biography of one of the singular figuressome might argue the singular figureof our time With unprecedented cooperation from John Paul II and the people who knew and worked with him throughout his life George Weigel offers a groundbreaking portrait of the Pope as a man a thinker and a leader whose religious convictions defined a new approach to world politicsand changed the course of history As even his critics concede John Paul II occupied a uniue place on the world stage and put down intellectual markers that no one could ignore or avoid as humanity entered a new millennium fraught with possibility and dangerThe Pope was a man of prodigious energy who played a crucial yet insufficiently explored role in some of the most momentous events of our time including the collapse of European communism the uest for peace in the Middle East and the democratic transformation of Latin America With an updated preface this edition of Witness to Hope explains how this man from a far country did all of that and much and what both his accomplishments and the unfinished business of his pontificate mean for the future of the Church and the world I wanted to rate this book 5 starsI really did The research scholarship and writing are 5 star although the minutiae the author delves into with respect to John Paul’s writings and Catholic doctrine is sometimes tedious There are two major weaknesses in my opinion though after reading 1000 pages I don’t feel like I know the personality Pope John Paul II I know what he did and I know what his philosophy is but I don’t know the man Maybe a Pope is unknowable? For whatever reason I felt an emptiness when I completed the bookThe second weakness is uite glaring the author perplexingly fails to examine the relationship that Pope John Paul II had with Ronald Reagan Reagan in fact is only briefly mentioned perhaps twice This is like writing a biography on FDR and mentioning Winston Churchill only as an afterthought It’s not only his disinterest in the PJPII – Reagan relationship that weakens the book meetings with other heads of state are given short shrift also We were given some meat on the bone when PJP II travelled to Cuba and met Castro but I want to know what went on with PJPII and Pinochet and General Jaruzelski and Clinton and Yarafat and Yeltsin and numerous others All these meetings were glossed over leaving the reader with neither the understanding of the subject’s interactions with others nor the commentary and opinions of those the subject interacted withI’ll stick with 4 stars but could be persuaded it is a 3 star biography
