Sophies world is shattered when disaster bankrupts her family Shes still reeling from the news when shes offered an unexpected solution Mr Argenton a wealthy stranger asks for her hand in marriageMarrying Mr Argenton will restore her familys fortunes and save them from scandal but condemns Sophie to a life in Northwood a vast and unnaturally dark mansion situated hours from civilisationSophie struggles to adjust to her new position as mistress over the desolate house Mr Argentons relatives are cold and Mr Argenton himself is keeping secrets Even worse the house isthan it seemsThe piano plays in the middle of the night Blood drips from the ceiling Sophie is pulled towards the terrifying truth Northwoods ancient halls are haunted The malevolent spiritsproduced by grisly deathsresent her intrusion into their homeTrapped in Northwood and desperate for an escape Sophies fate is further complicated as she finds herself drawn to the tall dark eyed man she married She suspects her feelings are returned but Mr Argenton is hiding something and his secrets are so dangerous that they might just be unforgivable I enjoyed reading this book but the characters were unrealistic at times I especially didn't like the way the young girl Elise was ignored Of course I realized why when I came to the end of the book The writer just wanted to have a Volume 2 Still the main character Sophie said she would help Elise but never did much to help except help fight the demon which a little too ridiculous for my taste I like gothic romance but this goes to a whole different level from gothic to totally unbelievable especially the scene with the blood dripping room with blood saturating Sophie and the whole room I disliked the ending of the book so much that instead of making me want read Volume 2 it made me want to write this review to say that I think the writer is just into gore to shock the readers and keep them wanting to buy Volume 2 etc Not this reader Also the book was way too expensive for the uality of writing When the book ended I felt like I'd been ripped off
