I never get tired of the sheer weirdness of the Enron Scandal but at the same time it's uite sad to think how many lives may have been affected either directly or indirectly be it in the freak accident California Blackouts or those whose jobs and finances were put on the line as the company began to fall apart Not just a cautionary tale but also a chilling albeit gripping story of greed and the ways in which money has a habit of bringing out the worst in modern America The Smartest Guys in the Room is one of the best turn of the century books on falling down the rabbit hole of corporate irresponsibility

Economy company with its skyrocketing profits and share price But that was before Fortune published an article by McLean that asked a seemingly innocent uestion How exactly does Enron make money From that point on Enron's house of cards began to crumble Now McLean and Elkind have investigated much deeper to offer the definitive book about the Enron scandal and the fascinating people behind itMeticulously researched and character driven Smartest Guys in the Room takes the reader deep into Enron's past and behind the closed doors of private. The Smartest Guys In the Room is a well written well researched attempt to unravel the financial shenanigans that led to Enron’s bankruptcy It’s a compelling and sometimes soapy indictment of the worst side of business and it ueasily foreshadows the financial crisis of 2008I can’t say enough about how well McLean and Elkind present the material in this book but the fact remains that a it’s really really long and b it’s about finance I learned a lot about securitization etc as a result of this book but nonetheless there were times when I just couldn’t stay engaged with all the accountancy blah blah blah stuffI started this book at Christmas and I’m just now finishing it in March Yeah it was a long slogWorth reading but one that I’m glad to finally boot off my nightstand
