In June of 1860 three year old Saville Kent was found at the bottom of an outdoor privy with his throat slit The crime horrified all England and led to a national obsession with detection ironically destroying in the process the career of perhaps the greatest detective in the land At the time the detective was a relatively new invention; there were only eight detectives in all of England and rarely were they called out of London but this crime was Detective Inspector Jonathan Jake Whicher 1 Oct 1814 29 June 1881 was one of the original eight members of the Detective Branch at the Scotland Yard established in 1842 he was also Charles Dickens's inspiration for Inspector Bucket Reading this I was thrown back in time to when everything was new Where social class gave you a pass for just about anything Had that not been a factor this may have been solved uicker Well Whicher did solve it he just couldn't prove it I really liked how the author tied in these events and people to other works of literature She also gave us old photos and news paper clipping
