TEXT Socrates A Man for Our Times

Socrates A Man for Our TimesA brilliant portrait of the Greek philosopher who personified philosophy Socrates was undeniably one of the greatest thinkers of all time yet he wrote nothing Throughout his life and indeed until his very last moment alive Socrates fully embodied his philosophy in thought and deed It is through the story of his life that we can fully grasp his powerful actions and ideasIn his h This is easy to read and entertaining which is initially seductive But ultimately Socrates A Man For Our Times reveals itself to be surprisingly shallow bigoted and locked into a very contemporary world view I began to get suspicious when this relatively short book paused for than a few pages to convince us that Socrates was a monotheist without any real context for why this might be important or how it relates to his philosophy Next we get extended exposition confirming how super heterosexual the dude was despite how you know everyone else was at the time And the final point at which I had to stop reading about 23rds of the way through came when the author begins a discussion of his trial with the calm assurance that it was all a meaningless sham despite Socrates' legitimate anti democratic teaching or the fact that one of his pupils Critias was a bloodthirsty autocratic dictator that controlled Athens during the rule of the Thirty I'm feeling personally annoyed right now because I wasted most of a vacation day reading this but it is clear to me that Paul Johnson has a distinct model of the perfect man for our times and in the end not unlike Plato he has crammed Socrates into this model with only a glancing regard to the facts You can get a accurate description through some uick searches on the internet or better yet I F Stone's book I'm guessing there are even better works but I haven't gotten to those yet
