Juggle in some childhood bogeys and you have a promising start unfortunately when it comes to the execution of the tale it all fell apartI finished the book a week ago and can only remember a couple of the characters with any clarity but I am not entirely sure if I have who is who right in my head For instance there is Evangeline was she the one whose mother was Soulange the Voodoo Priestess or is she the one who ran the bar? You know I am pretty sure she is one with the bar and an unhealthy relationship with the males of the Mason family So did her mother go to the Dreaming Place or was she killed by her sister witches? Or was her mother neither of these ancestors and soeone else entirely? You get the point by now it is one confusing bookOverall there are some good ideas in here but it is the execution that has let them down I have sadly already purchased the second book in the series so I will read it at some point but I certainly won't be looking forward to it with any sort of anticipation a dread of well I bought it so I'll have to read it

I plan to listen to the story again as I know I missed some things in the beginning the book is full of details big and small so pay attention The story is told through the different viewpoints of the characters The narrator for the audio book was great easy to listen to voiceThis series has a serious tone than his Witching Savannah series so if you’re looking for something similar to that you might be disappointed This is not a book for the kiddos or faint of heart contains violence and deathI will be readinglistening to the next book in the series as this series is full of potential that I hope will unfold in the second book I would recommend this book if you are into dark fantasy

The King of Bones and Ashes Witches of New Orleans Book 1From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Witching Savannah series comes the story of a young witchs uest to uncover her familys terrifying historyMagic is seeping out of the world leaving the witches whove relied on it for countless centuries increasingly hopeless While some see an inevitable end of their era others are courting madnesswilling to sacrifice former allies friends and family to retain the power they covet While the other witches watch their reality unravel young Alice Marin is using magics waning days to delve into the mystery of numerous disappearances in the occult circles of New Orleans Alice disappeared once toocaged in an asylum by blood relatives Recently freed she fears her family may beinvolved with the growing crisis than she ever dared imagineYet theshe seeks the truth about her familys troubled history theshe realizes her already fragile psyche may be at risk Discovering the cause of the vanishings though could be the only way to escape her mothers reach while determining the future of all witches People who enjoyed The LineThe SourceThe Void will enjoy this grown up if less frisky version Steeped in the old southern charms that prominently include voodoo and magic this is preparation for a larger story peppered with new characters and backstories to learn or that you think you learn than it is a novel on it's own but while occasionally gruesome and occasionally disappointing some of the abrupt deaths made me sad for the stories we didn't discover but this ultimately feels like an author warming up to tell a larger story Hopefully that's the case and the subseuent volumes get to revel a bit in this newly created old world I was sadly disappointed in Shivaree but Horn rather redeemed himself with Jilo so I'll be around for the next volume he puts out
