However what the novel depicts is the realities of when adult children need to begin to parent their parent and the stress of making decisions about care while also trying to be respect their parent's independence and dignityI found myself wishing the novel was longer Brought To Our Senses does a very good job of recreating the siblings' childhood experiences although I was left wanting information about the eldest sibling who was away and literally phoned in his role in the situation However maybe that was intentional to stress his absence from the situation A few extended family members and spouses are involved and again I found myself wishing this was explored a little What is it like for the spouse of someone who's parent has Alzheimer's? How does that stress affect their relationship? This is touched upon but not in great depth The author could easily write another similar novel depicting that story Then again despite my wanting to know about some of the characters the novel does what it set out to do it tells the story of four adult siblings caring for their mother who has Alzheimer'sThere needs to be novels like this The market is full of how to books about Alzheimer's care Do this Do that Don't do this Don't do that on and on Novels like this tell a story and the story being told provides a lot of information that people in the same situation can draw from along with the reassurance that even families who are flawed and struggle with complex relationships and stressful events can still try to do their best when the situation reuires their strength and communication
