Book á In An Iron Cage The Magic of Steampunk Æ Danielle Ackley-McPhail
Id Sherman Brenda Cooper Alma Alexander CJ Henderson Elektra Hammond Bernie Mojzes Danielle Ackley McPhail Patrick Thomas Stuart Jaffe James Chambers AC Wise James Daniel Ross Jeff Young and Darren Pearc I finished reading In an Iron Cage last weekend It was an interesting short story collection fourteen stories that explore or less the idea of magic in Steampunk universes Some of the stories worked for me and some didn’t I like both fantasy and well done Steampunk but I’m not sure the combination worksOf the 14 authors represented in this collection I was somewhat familiar with only one CJ Henderson whose urban fantasy novel Brooklyn Knight 2009 was disappointingThe first story “The Winter Court” by Bernie Mojzes was pretty good although the Steampunk elements felt somewhat extraneous to the storyThe second story “House of Automations” by James Chambers was a bit better and the Streampunk and fantasy elements felt well integrated The main characters also felt a little real like they had a life before and after the story So much so that I wondered if there was or may be a series of related storiesThe next three stories were uick and mostly forgettable reads If I recall correctly the magic element in all of them was rather weakThe sixth story “Little Girl with Pick Ribbons” by Stuart Jaffe was possibly the oddest story in the collection I think the human element dominated both the magic and Steampunk which was niceThree other stories I thought notable were“The Trans Siberian” by AC Wise was an enjoyable fantasy story about wer foxes? and humans living together if not in harmony in Russia“The First Flight of the Valhalla” by Darren W Pearce had perhaps the best integration of magic and Steampunk and it was a lot darker than the other stories in the collection Perhaps a bit too dark for me“The Case of the Duchess’s Dog” by Elektra Hammond was a uiet little story It immediately follows Pearce’s story so it was a nice relief from the darkness Not only was this a story about magic and Steampunk it was also a detective story I enjoyed the many devices the detective used to solve the crimeFor a collection of stories mostly by authors I’ve never read before I thought it was OK It was a little uneven as these collections tend to be Some of the stories seemed rushed others seemed shoehorned into the magic Steampunk theme but a few were pretty enjoyable With 14 stories spread across and fewer than 220 pages the less enjoyable stories weren’t so long as to be tiresome but some of the better stories were over too uickly
