I picked up Mindfulness Acceptance and Positive Psychology because I was interested in learning about mindfulness To my delight I learned a lot Editor Ciarrochi and Kasdan have assembled a collection of articles by key thought leaders to create a bridge between two exciting fields ACT and Positive Psychology I have to admit as an executive coach schooled in positive psychology I never even heard of ACT until I read this bookCIarrochi and Kasdan lay out a nice introduction to the book and say that therapists coaches and consultants are drowning in a sea of jargon While the editors are effective in translating the jargon into plain English they could have done a bit editing of some of the contributing authors Example Mindfulness encourages non evaluative contact with phenomenological experiences and attenuates emotional distortions of the perceptual process whereas positive reappraisal attributes a positively valenced semantic meaning to experience Yikes Now I'm really confusedIn contrast in another chapter the contributing authors do a really nice job distinguishing between self compassion and self esteem that any practitioner could understand In addition I loved the goal setting and commitment exercise in Chapter 6 It was clearly written and specific enough that a coach or therapist could replicate it with his or her clientsMindfulness Acceptance and Positive Psychology will serve as a solid reference guide Kudos to Ciarrochi and Kasden for instigating a dialogue between the two disciplines Each discipline can learn a lot from the other IF people can truly enter into a dialogue minus the jargon and with openness and no judgments Hmm sounds like mindfulness in actionMargaret H Greenberg co author of Profit from the Positive Proven Leadership Strategies to Boost Productivity and Transform Your Business with a foreword by Tom Rath
