book Bobby Moore

Bobby Moore By the Person Who Knew Him BestA tribute to the late Bobby Moore captain of England's World Cup winning side of 1966 one of the greatest footballers of his generation and a man who personified Britain in the swinging sixties This is his powerful and moving human interest life story as told by his wife Tina including his battle against cancer ‘But Bobby had been in that dark place before Lance Armstrong was even born In many ways it was evendevastatingin those days cancer was something you just didn't mention a taboo word a fearful prospect All I could think was he's only 23 and he's been handed his death warrant' Bobby Moore's death in 1993 at the age of 51 had a profound impact on the people of this country As the only English football captain ever to raise the World Cup he was not just a football icon but a national one Yet Bobby was an intensely reserved almost mysterious personality Only one person was his true friend and confidante his first wife Tina whom he met at 17 and married in 1962 With her he went through all the triumphs and crises of his professional career the life threatening illness that struck him at 23 his clashes with West Ham and later England manager Ron Greenwood his emergence as a footballer of international renown the almost unheard of media intrusion and the kidnap threats on their children that amazing 1966 World Cup Final day the drama of Bogota when he was accused of theft and his depression as he struggled to adapt to the end of his playing career Tina Moore's story of her life with Bobby the break up of their marriage and what happened afterwards is inspirational candid and told with revelations and authentic insight into what made Bobby tick Alongside previously unseen material that sheds new light on his character and anecdotes about players wives and managers told from a female perspective it is a moving tribute to a national icon by the person who knew him better than anyone This is a thoroughly enjoyable and informative read and will appeal to anyone who was around in the 60s and 70s particularly but far from exclusively those interested in football Above all it is a warm love story girl meets boy boy becomes World Cup winning captain golden couple lead golden celebrity life whilst retaining the very natural and personal love which drew them together long before he became famous But then Bobby Moore's career starts to go down hill and he changes gets a mistrress falls in love with her leaves his wife of twenty five years and his children devastating his familyTina Moore is still clearly in love with Bobby Moore despite all he did and she has very fond and happy memories of the good times not just as celebrities but as a couple and a family And it is that love and warmth for the human relationships that comes though so very strongly through the inevitable name dropping necessary to show the life they were leading and beyond the obsession with apparently prestigious brand names and the occasional boasting all very understandableTina with apparently a little but not too much professional help writes in a very open natural readable style which makes you wizz through the book and feel a real empathy and a real sense of loss at the end for the very personal non celebrity story of two people who fell in love and one who fell out of it Tina is very uncritical of Bobby despite what he did and her account of the break up of the marriage seems very sanitised and incomplete despite the apparent honesty She cannot face the fact that Bobby fell out of love with her and fell in love with someone else and we get no direct reference to the fact that he re married The hanging uestion over the latter part of the book is why when they were so happy did Bobby break it all up and marry someone else? Tina suggests that it is the way football treated Bobby after his playing career was over ignoring and shunning him and that it was that which led him to try and find necessary endorsement for his self esteem elsewhere This still doesn't explain when he had a wife as loving devoted lively and supportive as Tina was why he could not find what he needed within his family Something is missingIf you are a football fan there is enough football in the book to keep you interested if for some reason you are not interested in the very human story and if you are not a football fan there certainly isn't too much football to put you off this very personal tale So all in all an excellent read and in its Kindle form terrific value though it will go very uickly I would guess
